Antoni’s Restaurant-Diner & Lounge, an American diner with a Mediterranean flair, is celebrating its seventh year in business. In honor of this milestone, Antoni’s, whose executive chef Denny Tzakis is a Greek native, recently hosted an anniversary celebration.

The Greek-inspired anniversary menu included old-world lamb roasted on a spit, souvlaki, spanakopita, mousaka, stuffed grape leaves, pastitsio, gyro, burgers, Greek salad, baklava and more. Guests were treated to live entertainment from singer Maria George and bouzouki player Brett Pittner, as well as a belly dancer and Greek folk dancing.

“We are one of the few Greek restaurants left in town, holding onto some of the older traditions yet also infusing new music and celebrations to keep Greek culture and food alive in the Portland area,” said Tzakis. “Here at Antoni’s we like to say we are the ‘West Coast version of an East Coast diner.’”

In 1989, Tzakis and his wife, Helen, moved to Portland and opened a restaurant in Cedar Mill, which they ran for 21 years. Their sons, Anthony and Napoleon Tzakis, grew up in the restaurant business. Anthony felt it was time to follow in his father’s footsteps, thus Antoni’s was formed. For seven years now Antoni’s has provided not just food, but a Mediterranean dining experience.

“The food is homemade and excellent. Friendly business that takes pride in their food,” said patron Kris B. “The gyros really are the best.”

Antoni’s signature menu classics include braised lamb shank, Santorini chicken, pastitsio, ouzo prawns, calamari and much more. It also serves classic American and Mediterranean cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Last Saturday of the month is “Greek Night.” Brett Pittner and Maria George perform along with a featured belly dancer.

They are currently building a homestead from scratch on two little acres in central Texas. There’s a lot to be done to become somewhat self-sufficient, but they are debt-free and get to spend their days living this simple, good life together with their five young children.
