The City of Rouyn-Noranda provided an update on its management of stray animals. At a press briefing, Mayor Mario Provencher explained the reasons why Rouyn-Noranda issued a call for tenders for its pound service.
According to him, the problems of governance and the rising costs to the SPCA of Rouyn-Noranda are there for something.
“Except that, in recent years, the [additional amounts requested by the SPCA] were larger. The last one was $86,000 and even an additional $50,000 was offered to allow them to restructure with the help of our organizations such as the CLD and the skills we have here at City Hall. For some services, it was an inadmissibility. He did not want our help. ”
In 2016, the pound service cost the Ville de Val-d’Or approximately $8,800.
For the same period, the city of Rouyn-Noranda paid approximately $308,000.
The City of Rouyn-Noranda assumes more than 60% of the expenses of the SPCA while the other Quebec cities pay only 10 to 20% of the budget of their SPCA.
A petition to ensure the sustainability of the services of the SPCA of Rouyn-Noranda has collected more than 3500 signatures to date.
Contacted earlier today, the Rouyn-Noranda SPCA did not respond to our interview requests.
