The former federal and provincial cabinet minister Keith Ashfield died at the age of 66. He had planned to contest for PC nomination.
Ashfield’s past executive assistant Kevin Price, said that Ashfield died peacefully possibly of a heart attack during his sleep. He added that the death was just the way Ashfield wanted it and he didn’t want to go through any agony. Price was with the family of former MP. According to Price, Ashfield meant a lot to lots of people and was also a good family person.
Price said that all the support from the public is appreciated by Ashfield’s family, but they need some quiet time for a few days to make some arrangements and to move on. Ashfield is survived by wife Judy and children Seth and Tara. The President of the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick, Rick Lafrance, sent condolences to the family on behalf of the party through Twitter. He expressed his sorrow and conveyed the deepest sympathy to the family and all those who loved the politician.
Early this March, Ashfield revealed his plan to make a comeback into politics. He also received the PC nomination for Oromocto-Lincoln-Fredericton riding. He had undergone open–heart surgery and cancer treatment earlier.
Gagetown Petitcodiac MLA Ross Wetmore had breakfast with him on Saturday and said that Keith looked great on that day and the news of his death was a big shock.
